What’s the buzz about?

For decades we’ve known that cover crops improve soil fertility and break disease cycles. However, the list of benefits and uses just keeps growing: improved water infiltration, enhanced nutrient cycling, reduced soil compaction, better water holding capacity, weed suppression, nutrient cycling, water quality protection, excess N sequestration, erosion prevention, biodiversity enrichment, pest control, pollinator habitat support. All this and good looks too!

At Buzz Seeds we believe that all cover crop mixes should support pollinators. That’s why we design our mixes to maximize floral resources. We work closely with local natural resource experts to make sure that none of our seeds will become problem weeds.

Guided by a vision of protecting the land, the Mondavi family is committed to fostering environmental stewardship. The winery is under the direction of Peter Mondavi Jr. and his brother, Marc Mondavi, who steward the family business passed to them by their father, legendary Napa Valley wine icon Peter Mondavi Sr. Today, the Charles Krug winery is a majority woman-owned business as the family has proudly welcomed members of the fourth generation. Diam Bouchage has always been an innovative company; every year, it allocates a substantial budget to research and development.

In 2003, the company began investing in a revolutionary, patented process, called the DIAMANT® process that uses the properties of supercritical CO2 to extract the volatile compounds of cork and eradicate the molecules responsible for giving a taste to the wine, especially those causing “cork taint”.

Twelve years later, the company made yet another breakthrough in major technological progress with the launch of Origine by Diam®, a closure that reconciles science and nature, integrating a beeswax emulsion and binding agent composed of 100% plant-derived polyols.

Earthworks Biochar is produced in the Sierra Mountains of California and is derived from woody biomass. Our biochar is used by farmers as a soil amendment due to its highly adsorbent properties. Biochar retains moisture and other nutrients that would otherwise leach out of root zones, improving crop yields, saving water and reducing fertilizer requirements. Biochar can help reclaim degraded soils and is also used in stormwater and wastewater systems to capture and filter pollutants out of water, including metals. Biochar has been found to have multiple uses beyond agriculture and Earthworks is just at the tip of learning about how biochar can be used in new markets like Green Building (ex. concrete, asphalt) and graphene production. The Earthworks Biochar product is Carbon Negative certified by the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) as a source of sequestered carbon and lab tested by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) to ensure customers it is of the highest quality.

Established in 1776, the young Louis Roederer succeeded his uncle in 1833 and gave to the Champagne House his own name.

An aesthete and entrepreneur, the heir took a visionary approach to enriching his vines, aiming to master every stage of the wine’s creation. He forged the wine’s unique style, character, and taste. In the mid-nineteenth century, Louis Roederer acquired some of Champagne’s Grand Cru vineyards — an approach that contrasted sharply with contemporary practices. He nurtured his vineyards, familiarized himself with the specific characteristics of each parcel, and methodically acquired the finest land. Louis Roederer’s guiding principle was that all great wine depends on the quality of the soil, a passion for tradition, and an astute vision of the future. Under his visionary leadership the fame and reputation of the House of Louis Roederer was firmly established.

Founded in eastern Napa county, Napachar converts woody waste from vineyard management and local forest fuel-reduction efforts into Biochar, one of the richest soil amendments and most stable forms of carbon capture available today. By making our biochar with portable kilns on site in the vineyard and forest, we reduce transportation costs and emissions, and offer a drop-in replacement for burn-piling and wood-chipping. Additionally, our kilns are substantially lower polluting than these alternatives, producing almost no smoke and releasing a tenth of the CO2. Our resulting product is ready for incorporation into vineyard soil, where it serves as an organic tool for holding onto water and nutrients in the soil and encourages increased growth and crop production, with no detriment to the quality of the fruits.

Napa Wildlife Rescue is the only organization permitted by the California Fish and Wildlife to rescue, rehabilitate and reunite/release wildlife in Napa County. Every year we work with well over a thousand orphaned or injured wildlife, with the goal of returning them to their wild lives. Barn owls are an excellent alternative to harmful rodenticides, otherwise known as rat poison. Rodenticides weaken the rodents before killing them, making them slow and attractive to predators. Then, when they are caught and eaten, the poison spreads and kills the predators of the rodents. This makes the rodent problem even worse, because there are fewer predators to control their population. Instead of using cruel poisons, whose effects spread beyond your intentions, they recommend an approach called Integrated Pest Management. This is a systemic way of thinking about pests in the environment, which addresses the root of the problem instead of only the symptoms.
